- The Welcome Pineapple - "The Pineapple was a symbol of welcome in the Americas long before Columbus arrived in 1492. West Indians displayed pineapple tops near the entrance of their huts to indicate that strangers were welcome. The Spanish took the pineapple symbol of hospitality back to Spain where it became popular and quickly spread to England. English colonists who settled in America in the 1700's built their homes with carved pineaspples over the doorways and on the gateposts, thereby bringing this symbol of welcome back home where the tradition continues today.
